discreet monuments III is a discreet public monument dedicated to the fastly disappearing personal memories of slide films (diapozitive, diafilme) produced in communist romania.
by answering a series of absurd questions, the spectator triggers one of three algorithmic modes that randomly combine and edit a selection of slides (some educational, others produced for entertainment purposes) into an audio-visual experience which is completed by a generated soundscape.
the work can be accessed only in front of Casa Scânteii, in the vicinity of the place where, between 1960 and 1990, stood Lenin's statue.

discreet monuments is a new series of projects by dalpofzs, that reimagines the 'public monument' in the context of contemporary cultures permeated by digital technologies and marked by their consequences. we will create works that interrogate the limits between public and private, personal and political, perceptible and imperceptible in more or less known public spaces.

part nostalgic and part critical, discreet monuments III algorithmically shuffles and edits a selection of slides, creating an audio-visual experience that is completed by a generated soundscape.
How It Works
1. User answers 3 questions in an MS-DOS-style interface
2. Based on answers, one of 3 art modes is selected:
- **Simple Mode** - meditative slideshow with ambient drone
- **Memory Mode** - interactive trauma processing with zoom, masks, memory ghosts
- **Avant-garde Mode** - chaotic experimental sensory experience
3. User activates audio (required by browsers)
4. 3-5 minute immersive audiovisual experience begins
this discreet public monument, accessed on a personal mobile device, is 'located' in front of casa scanteii (monumental soviet style building, one of the main centers for romanian media and propaganda during the communist era), in the area where, between 1960 and 1990, stood the statue of Lenin.
